Local SEO for businesses: become easier to find and choose

Local SEO starts with the right Google Business Profile, clear services, and real service areas. Get a practical plan for the website and for measuring enquiries.

Local SEO is about people in a relevant area finding the business and understanding whether it can help. The work covers both the Google Business Profile and the information on the website, but it must be assessed against the enquiries that actually come in.

Start with what the customer needs to decide: the right service, location, timing, and next step. A business that gives clear answers to these questions has a better foundation for turning visibility into contact.

Start with an accurate Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile is intended for eligible businesses with in-person customer contact. Use the business’s real name and categories that describe the business. Do not add keywords to the name or create profiles at virtual office addresses where the business is not actually operated in line with Google’s requirements.

Assign a named person responsibility for the profile. Keep a simple list of who has access, who updates the information, and who responds to customers. Maintain control of access even when an SEO agency is helping you.

Understand what affects local results

Google states that relevance, distance, and how well known the business is are key factors in local rankings. Complete information helps Google understand the business. You cannot buy a better organic local position from Google, and a good profile does not override the importance of distance.

Prioritise accurate services, opening hours, and useful photos before spending time on minor wording tweaks. Check how the profile and website appear on mobile. If a customer finds a service you no longer offer, that is a more concrete problem than a headline missing a particular keyword variation.

Show where you actually meet or visit customers

Google distinguishes between walk-in locations, businesses that visit customers, and hybrid businesses. If you do not receive customers at the address, it should not be shown as a visiting address. The service area should describe the areas you actually serve. A larger area in the profile is not a substitute for real capacity to deliver.

Hypothetical example: A cleaning company that travels from Drammen to selected neighbouring areas can explain where it takes regular assignments and where it only considers larger jobs. State any limitations clearly. That is more useful to the customer than presenting the company as if it had offices in every municipality.

Let the website answer questions before booking

Create a well-developed page for each service that requires its own explanation. Use the customer’s everyday language, and show what is included, how pricing is agreed, where you deliver, and what happens after an enquiry. Contact information and practical terms must match the Business Profile.

A local landing page is useful when it has unique content: an actual location customers can visit, local delivery terms, relevant work photos, or documented projects. If you are only changing the city name, it is better to gather the information on a clear service area page.

  • Show real work and explain what help the customer will get.
  • Make the phone number and contact form easy to use on mobile.
  • State who will follow up, and avoid promising faster responses than you can deliver.
  • Check that the contact form gives a clear confirmation and reaches the right recipient.

Make customer reviews part of your follow-up

Ask customers for honest reviews after a genuine experience. Google allows you to share a review link or QR code, but prohibits incentives such as a discount in exchange for a review. Do not ask the customer to write specific praise or invent an experience.

Use the feedback to identify what is unclear in your delivery. If several people mention that pricing or arrival time was difficult to understand, the website and booking process should be improved. Respond objectively, and handle details about individual cases in a private channel.

Create a measurement plan that follows the customer through to the job

Business Profile performance can show website clicks and taps on the call button, among other things. A tap is not the same as an answered call or a sale. Google also states that the report may include activity from both organic results and Google Ads, so the numbers should not automatically be attributed to SEO alone.

Record a baseline before making changes, and review progress monthly alongside seasonality, capacity, and any ad campaigns. Choose a small number of metrics that you will actually follow up. Compare like-for-like periods, and investigate causes before drawing conclusions.

How does local SEO relate to ChatGPT Ads?

ChatGPT Ads is a separate paid channel. OpenAI states that the ads are separate from ChatGPT’s responses and do not change which responses the model gives. Paid advertising therefore does not provide a purchased organic recommendation of the business.

Good, clear information on the website is useful regardless of where the customer comes from. Still, local search results, ad enquiries, and mentions in AI responses should be assessed separately. Media Access can help you prioritise your profile, service pages, and measurement based on what is preventing customers from getting in touch.

Questions and answers

Do I need a separate page for every city I serve?

Only if the pages provide useful, distinct information. Genuine delivery terms, customer-facing locations, and documented work can justify separate pages. Otherwise, a good service area page is often easier to maintain.

Can an SEO agency guarantee first place locally?

No. Instead, agree on specific deliverables, responsibilities, and metrics. Local rankings are also affected by factors such as distance and other businesses, and results may vary between searches.
